Definition of Support
Meaning of the Term as it Pertains to Mattresses
What is Support?
A mattress's ability to stabilize a resting body and evenly distribute weight, support is the most essential factor shoppers want to look at when researching new mattresses. Proper mattress support allows the spine to maintain its natural alignment and is imperative to complete sleep cycles. Lack of support may result in muscle fatigue, back pain, and a myriad of cognitive effects related to sleep deprivation.
Support is commonly confused with comfort. Both are important to a mattress but have distinct functions. Comfort is the initial feel of the mattress and is meant to lull an individual to sleep by making the person feel cozy and relaxed. Support is the mattress's ability to hold the body in place throughout the night. Mattress comfort level does not affect support, nor does support affect comfort.
