F.A.Q.

What Is the Difference Between Bar Stools and Counter Stools?

Stools generally come in three different heights: bar, counter, and table. Stool height is measured from the floor to the top of the seat, not including the backrest.

  1. Bar-height stools: These are around 28 inches in height and are ideal for sitting at a typical 40-inch bar.
  2. Counter-height stools: These are around 24 to 27 inches and are designed for sitting at a counter or kitchen island around 36 inches high.
  3. Table-height stools: These sit the lowest at only 18-20 inches and are designed to fit underneath a table or breakfast nook at the standard 28-30 inch height.

Make sure you know the height of the table or counter in your kitchen to ensure you choose the right stool height. If your stool is too tall, you will bump your knees against the bottom. If your stool is too short, it will leave you awkwardly reaching up for your drinks or food.

There are also a few different styles of stools at all three heights. Some barstools swivel for ease of access and comfortable conversation when several people are sitting together. Some barstools are padded or cushioned, while others are simpler. Cushioned barstools are typically more comfortable for sitting but can be much more difficult to keep clean, while stools with no cushioning are typically easier to maintain.

How Many Stools Do I Need to Fit at My Bar or Table?

As a general rule, bars and tables should typically have about 28-30 inches per seat. If they're too crowded, you’ll be bumping elbows with your guests. Too much space will make the counter feel sparse and lonely. A distance of around 28-30 inches per seat gives you enough room to move while still feeling cozy and companionable.

To determine how many barstools you need in your space, divide the length in inches of your bar or counter by 30. Keep in mind that if you use a wider stool, it may take up more space. This can make it difficult to walk around or get into the seat if you overcrowd your table. Ultimately, it’s best to go with what feels comfortable for you.

How Should I Choose a Barstool?

With so many options, there are several things to consider when selecting the right stools for your bar or counter. First, think about the height you’ll need, and how many stools you’d like around your table or bar. Then, think about the design elements around your kitchen or dining room to help you choose a stool that will match.
