F.A.Q.

What is the best seat height for a dining chair?

The optimum height of a dining chair is based on your table. A taller table will require taller chairs to feel comfortable. A standard dining table is about 28 to 30 inches tall. You'll want about a foot between your seat and the bottom of the table so your knees aren't bumping up against the underside and your food is in a comfortable position. This means an 18-inch-high dining chair, measured from the floor to the top of the seat, is optimum. The height doesn't include the back or armrests.

If you have a non-standard dining table, or use a bar, counter, or kitchen island instead, you may need slightly taller chairs. Bar and counter stools are made to be comfortable for these taller table alternatives. Generally, you'll want to measure the height of your dining surface and look for a chair or stool about a foot shorter.

What are the different types of dining chairs?

There are a few options when it comes to dining room chairs. Variations may include:

  1. Back support: Chairs may come with or without a backrest. If there is one, it can also come in different shapes, such as rounded or squared, and it may range from a flat, single piece to a slatted or sculpted style. Some modern dining chairs may also be curved for more ergonomic support.

  1. Armrests: Dining chairs may or may not have armrests. Arms can also range from simple, flat rests to ornately carved or molded designs.

  1. Skirting: Some types of chairs may have a skirt designed to cover the legs. These are more common for formal dining chairs, such as those used for wedding or banquet halls. The skirt may be detachable for easy cleaning.

  1. Upholstery: Dining chairs can be upholstered or padded, or they may be hard, exposed wood or metal. Hard chairs are often easier to clean, but upholstery adds more comfort and warmth. Padded or upholstered dining chairs come in a variety of colors and may be fully covered or only padded on the seat.

How many chairs should a dining room table have?

Just like the height of the chair, the number of chairs you need is dependent on the type and size of table you have. If you try to cram too many chairs around a smaller table, you and your family or guests might feel crowded and bump elbows while trying to eat. If you don't have enough chairs, there may not be room for everyone or the table may feel empty.

Generally, you want to give about 24 to 30 inches of space for each seat. Square tables are usually 36 to 44 inches wide, and can typically fit one chair per side. Rectangular tables may be longer, fitting two or three chairs on each long side plus one chair at each end.

Round tables are a bit more variable, so you'll need to know the circumference of your particular table. Divide the circumference by 30 inches per chair. Keep in mind that if you choose a wider chair, you may need more space per seat, and don't forget to add extra chairs if you have a removable leaf.
