F.A.Q.

What is a wall sconce?

A wall sconce is a type of light fixture mounted on a wall instead of the ceiling. It has "arms" that extend from a base, and often includes some kind of covering over the light source. They come in many styles, from classic and traditional to modern and contemporary.

How high should you hang a wall sconce next to your bed?

The ideal height for bedside sconces can vary based on the sconce design and your personal preference, but a general rule of thumb is to install them between 60–72 inches from the floor. For reading in bed, the sconce should be placed approximately 6–12 inches above where your shoulders will be when sitting up in bed. Try positioning the sconce around 48 inches above the mattress.

Make sure the light source is not directly in your eyes. The bulb should be above eye level but not so high that it only casts downward light. You'll also want to place the switch in a location that is easy to reach from your bed, especially if you plan to use it as a reading light.

What’s the difference between a wall light and a wall sconce?

The terms "wall light" and "wall sconce" are often used interchangeably. However, a wall sconce is a specific type of wall light with one or more arms that extend from a single base, with light sources often covered by shades or glass diffusers. They are designed to be both functional and decorative. Wall sconces can be used for accent lighting or to provide general ambient light in a room.

Wall lights comprise a broader category that includes any light fixture attached to the wall, from sconces to more utilitarian fixtures like swing-arm lamps or recessed wall lights. They can serve various purposes, including task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting.
