F.A.Q.

What's the Difference Between an End Table and a Side Table?

You are not alone if you cannot distinguish between an end table and a side table. The two terms are often used interchangeably. Side and end tables are both placed adjacent to other living room furniture, typically sofas and chairs, and both hold items such as lamps, drinks, and decorative pieces.

A few subtle differences include:

  1. Side tables typically have a surface area of about 18 to 26 inches, while the top surface of end tables tends to be closer to 12 to 18 inches.

  1. Functionality rules the purchase of end tables, while style tends to have a greater impact on side table choices.

  1. End tables, as you might expect, are usually placed at the ends of a sofa, while side tables are typically near seating but not necessarily directly at one end.

What Are the Differences Between Various Kinds of End and Side Tables?

Whether you are shopping for a table that slides cleanly between the couch and the wall, a table with a flourish to serve as a focal point or a table that can store your collection of remote controls, there are plenty of end and side tables to meet your needs.

  1. Rectangular and square tables fit nicely into corners but often take up a bit more space than other tables. Straight-lined pieces are usually associated with more traditional designs.

  1. Curvier shapes withcircular or oval table tops often take up less space. Modern designs frequently feature curvy table shapes.

  1. Some side and end tables have shelves or drawers for added storage space.
  2. Nesting tables allow you to stylishly tuck away extra tables until needed.

  1. The open-ended design of c-shaped tables provides a chic way to slide your table into a comfortable position while you dine or work at your sofa or chair.

  1. Ottomans and poufs can double up as side or end tables, which can be helpful when furnishing small spaces.

Which Side Table or End Table Should I Get?

Furnishing your living room does not have to break the bank. Find affordable tables or a great side and end table sale that fits your living room furniture budget.

Choose a functional table that complements your design.

  1. Select a table about the same height but no less than 2 inches shorter than the arms of the adjacent chair or sofa. Choose an end table that does not protrude beyond the couch.

  1. Choose a table with a top large enough to accommodate everything that will rest on it.

  1. Consider the impact of material on functionality. Decide if you would prefer a stain-resistant glass table top or a wooden table that you can dust without the need for a glass cleaner.

  1. Select materials that unify your design. For example, complement a boho style with a wicker end table or glam it up with an ornate metal side table.
