King Size Mattresses

How big are king size mattresses?

Standard king bed mattresses are one of the widest mattresses available, measuring at a whopping 76″ in width, whereas in length, you have typically have 80″. The mattress typically provides enough room for two adults to stretch out in luxurious comfort, with the space to occasionally have their pet or child sleep in the bed too.

If you are over six feet tall, you might want to consider the California King mattress that has 4″ less in width but more in length than the standard version. So, such a mattress measuring 72″ wide and 86″ long will need a bed frame that is slightly longer. In some cases, because of the frame's construction, a king size bed might also require a so-called split king mattress which is essentially two twin mattresses pushed together.

King mattresses types

The four most common king size mattress types are innerspring, foam, hybrid, and air mattresses. Each type suits different sleepers as they seek a particular feature from bouncy surface to contouring properties and huggy feel.

Innerspring mattresses are constructed from a layer of steel coils surrounded by fiber padding, typically wool, cotton, or foam. The coil's number, thickness, and placement can affect the feel of the mattress. On the contrary, foam mattresses typically made of polyurethane foam, including latex and memory foam, provide a highly cushioned experience. King size memory foam mattresses, in particular, are "curve-forming" as they soften with body heat and pressure, thus, being ideal for all sleeping positions.

Suppose you want something in the middle of the two previously mentioned types. In that case, a hybrid mattress combines features from a foam mattress and box spring types as it typically contains a coil support system but with a significantly thicker comfort layer. Whereas, if you want something completely different, try a king air mattress made from an inflatable layer topped with foam.
