What is an Innerspring Mattress?
A mattress that uses steel coils for body support, an innerspring mattress incorporates springs at the core of the unit to absorb the weight of a resting body. Proper spring support balances weight distribution and pushes back against the body to hold the spine in healthy alignment. Innerspring cores may use classic Bonnell coils, free-moving independent coils, or continuous coil designs. Soft upholstery layers encase spring support systems and provide insulation and cushioning. Innerspring mattresses typically require box-springs for additional support.
A conventional mattress type, innerspring is the oldest and most commonly used mattress construction. On estimate, about 80% of homes use innerspring mattresses. In most instances, innerspring mattresses are more cost effective than memory foam, hybrid, and latex options.
