Blue Barstools

Your barstools should be 9” to 12” shorter than your bar or kitchen island. That means you should choose 30” tall barstools if your counter is 42” tall. This height will enable you to sit comfortably without knocking your knees against the underside of the counter. 

The width of the barstool is another factor to consider. Most barstools measure between 15” and 21” wide. You should leave at least 8” to 10” of space between each barstool to give guests plenty of room to dine and socialize. If, for instance, your kitchen island is 72” long, you can comfortably fit three barstools measuring 16” wide along one side of the island while leaving 10” space between each seat. 

Finally, consider the depth of your bar or kitchen island. Look for barstools that are small enough to tuck partially or fully under the counter overhang to save space when not in use.
