The Entryway Benches Guide

Corral clutter and create an organized area near the doors entering your home with a stylish entryway bench. Often paired with hooks for hanging jackets, scarves and more, an entryway bench provides a comfortable and compact place to put on shoes before heading out to take on your day (or night). Find the perfect bench for your home using our guide below.

Entryway Bench Features

Creating an aesthetic that sets the tone for the rest of your home has never been easier; today’s entryway benches come in a range of materials, sizes, and styles. Most typically used in the entryway, foyer or mudroom, you can also use a bench for a cohesive flow out to your exterior living spaces. Here are some factors to consider.

Sensible Size

To keep a streamlined space where traffic flows, it’s important to choose a bench built for narrow areas that will add style and function without bulk.

F.A.Q.

What makes an entryway bench different from other benches?

Entryway benches are distinct because they often contain storage solutions. They usually sit right inside your entryway, or a short distance from your main door. This makes them a great place to store items such as backpacks, purses, coats, and shoes. Anything you might need when you’re on your way out can be stored right next to the door for grab-and-go access.

Entryway benches also provide a convenient place to put on and take off your shoes. Since it’s right next to the door, you won’t be tracking mud or dirt throughout your home. They usually include some kind of shelf space or under-bench storage to keep your shoes out of the way so they won’t be tripped on.

How big should an entryway bench be?

The size of an entryway bench depends on the size of your entryway, how it will be used, and your storage needs. You don’t want your bench to take up too much room in your entrance, making it difficult to walk around when coming in the door. For this reason, most entryway benches have a narrow profile.

However, if you plan to use the bench for things like putting on shoes and getting ready, you’ll want it to be large enough and wide enough to sit comfortably. If you and your family will be getting ready together, make sure it’s also long enough to seat multiple people so you don’t have to take turns or sit on the floor. Generally, a two-person bench is about 52 inches long, and a three-person bench is around 80 inches.

Benches with more storage are typically larger. Some may include drawers, shelves, or cubbies under or around the bench. There are even some benches that are much taller and include shelves or coat hooks built into the bench for holding various items.

How do you style an entryway bench?

To style an entryway bench, you want things that will feel cozy without taking up too much of your precious entryway space. You’ll likely want to avoid too many plush pillows or blankets since you’re not planning on lounging there long and they’ll take up space unnecessarily. One or two pillows may make it more comfortable to lean on, but more than that will probably just get in the way.

Many people style their entryway benches with a durable coordinating rug. This serves the dual function of adding comfort while also giving you and your family or guests a place to wipe their feet before entering the home.

You can also style an entryway by adding some wall art above or next to your bench. This can set the tone of your home and has a narrow enough profile that it won’t interfere with the function of the bench.
