What We Love About: Bombe Chests

Posted In Design - 09/11/2018

Distinct with their delightfully curvy lines, these exquisite accent pieces originated in 1700’s Parisian design.  With a plump, bulging shape they gain their name for the French term for bomb. Bombe chests are also referred to as bombay chests, though this alternate name can lead to confusion as it is not in reference to the city of Bombay, India now known as Mumbai.

The stately shape is elegant and enticing, making it a popular addition to homes with traditional decor.  As an accent in the foyer or entryway, these pieces were originally festooned with scrolling handles, gold leaf, and carved embellishments.  Offering roomy top and storage drawers, today you can find bombe chests in styles from classic to contemporary.  These graceful pieces have made their way to living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms creating captivating looks and practical functionality.
