Guide to Karabagh Rugs & Carpets
The Duchy of Jraberd
Historically the Armenians of Karabagh were governed by principalities or duchies. The Five Duchies were Khachen, Jraberd, Varanda, Dizak and Golestan. Jrebard, Chondzoresk, and Kasim Ushak (Kazanbulak) are historically Armenian towns in the Northern Duchy of Jraberd in Karabagh. In a fascinating political system there were Armenian Princes or as we say in modern times Governors even while Karabagh was a Moslem governed Khanate. At times these Armenian rulers had so much autonomy they were virtually independent and at other times they were merely a buffer between their people and other leaders.
The essence to this is control and for the Armenians it was very much like the Kizil Bash system for the Azeri. People were controlled by leaders of their own type.

Cloud Band Kazak
This spectacular 19th century rug is a fine example of one of the most popular types of Caucasian rugs. Dealers usually call these Kazaks and the name sticks. However these carpets are more properly attributed to Karabagh. The red wefts and medium depression attest to that attribution. One odd thing about this rug is the rare border that is usually seen in very old Caucasian rugs.
Here is a Classical Cloud-Band Kazak, circa 1850-1870, Caucasus Mountains, measuring 48 X 109 inches.
