How To Choose an Outdoor Rug for Your Patio

A perfect rug is more than a functional addition to your outdoor patio. It’s an aesthetic statement that ties the whole atmosphere together.

Choosing the perfect outdoor rug isn’t easy, but we’re here to help. Start by thinking about the overall style you want to put together.

For a modern, minimalist patio that focuses on open spaces and understated decoration, a simple rug in a neutral tone completes the look. Think about black, gray, or even beige rugs with minimal patterns.

Bohemian enthusiasts prefer an eclectic, maximalist vibe. A woven or fringed rug in earthy tones gives off a cozy, effortless feel that fits in with wicker furniture and hanging plants.

For a  coastal-inspired patio, look for patterns and colors fit for an ocean-front property. Sand-colored rugs and blue-and-white striped patterns complement the nautical aesthetic.

Rustic or vintage patios call for intricate, distressed patterns in warm neutral tones. Any natural fiber material adds an extra touch of warmth, but it’s essential to find a balance between outdoor durability and feel.

If you’re trying to set up a luxurious or elegant space, opt for ornate rugs. Floral or medallion patterns create a premium atmosphere as long as you use them intentionally.

Size and Layout Tips

There are a few general placement and size considerations that apply to most patio spaces.

When it comes to size, it should always match the general purpose of the area. A small balcony or patio, for example, calls for a small runner or round rug that amplifies the cozy element without overwhelming your guests.

Lounge areas require larger rugs that fit under the legs of the furniture. This helps anchor and tie the space together. Dining areas follow a similar concept. Make sure the rug under your dining table is large enough so that chairs remain on it when pulled out.

Weather-Resistance and Material Guide

Outdoor rugs have a few special considerations when it comes to materials. Most importantly, the textile used should be able to withstand weather and prolonged sun exposure.

If the rug is exposed in an open area, choose a sturdy material such as polypropylene or polyester. Solution-dyed acrylic rugs also make for durable outdoor rugs for rain, although they aren’t as common.

For covered patios where the rug isn't as exposed to the element, you can choose less resistant materials like natural fibers or recycled plastics.

Maintenance and Cleaning Tips

Most outdoor materials withstand a fair beating before they wear out. However, a few cleaning and maintenance tips can help you improve their lifespan:

Shake and vacuum the rug regularly to remove debris and dust

Wash and hose down synthetic rugs every few months for a deep cleaning

Dry the rug completely before placing it back (to avoid growing mold)

Store the rug indoors during periods when you won’t be using your patio

Non-synthetic rugs wear down quicker no matter what you do, but you should still follow these tips to get the most out of your rug.

F.A.Q.

Can you leave outdoor patio rugs out in the rain?

You can leave outdoor patio rugs out in the rain if they’re made from waterproof materials such as polypropylene. However, in constant rain, even water-resistant rugs are prone to developing mold.

What size rug is best for a patio?

There isn't a specific best size for a patio rug — it all comes down to the furniture and area you’re working with. A rug bigger than 8 by 10 feet works for large dining areas, while anything between 5 by 7 feet is better for smaller lounging spaces.

Do outdoor rugs get moldy?

Yes, even water-resistant outdoor rugs can get moldy. To prevent this, make sure they don’t retain moisture for too long by setting up proper drainage.

What’s the best material for an outdoor rug?

There isn’t a specific material that’s better than others, but polypropylene seems to be the most popular choice. It’s durable, fade-proof, and will tolerate well rain and moisture in general.
