Dining Tables

A natural gathering place for friends and family, your dining table is one of the most well-used pieces of furniture in your home. Whether hosting a holiday gathering, pulling out the board games for family night, or catching up with friends over brunch, your dining table is a long-lasting investment that serves many purposes.

Dining tables come in different materials and styles to blend in with your design preferences and match other already existing furniture in the room. Depending on the style, your table can influence the mood of the room.

When choosing your dining table, it’s essential to pick the right materials, style, and size for your space and design preference. Follow along with our dining table buying guide to ensure you find the perfect fit.

F.A.Q.

How large should your dining table be?

The ideal size of a dining room table depends on your room’s measurements and the number of people you want to accommodate at your table. Although individual preferences vary, the general rule is to allow two feet of space per person for comfortable seating.

For example, a round table 48 inches in diameter or a rectangular design with the same length would comfortably accommodate four people. Tables with 60, 72, and 90-inch lengths are more appropriate for gatherings of six or more. Also, remember to leave at least 36 inches of space between the table and walls or other furniture so it's easy to walk around the table.

What dining table shape is best for a small space?

For small spaces, consider two dining table shapes and one feature:

  1. Round or oval tables: The lack of sharp corners makes oval and round tables more suitable in small spaces because you can maneuver around them better, especially in tight corners. Since everyone sits an equal distance apart, these shapes have the added benefit of facilitating better conversation flow.

  1. Pedestal tables: Regardless of which shape better suits your space and style, pedestal tables are best for furnishing a small dining room. With a single, central support instead of four legs, these designs have more legroom, making adding an extra chair in a pinch easier.

What dining table material options are available?

Different materials offer different aesthetics and durability for dining tables:

  1. Wood: A wide range of grains and finishes provide different levels of durability and aesthetic appeal. Popular examples include oak, maple, walnut, and cherry.

  1. Glass: Easy to clean and maintain, glass tables create a sense of openness and can help brighten up a room

  1. Metal: For a durable material with a modern look, metal is popular, especially in industrial-style designs.

  1. Stone: Marble, granite, or quartz are durable stones commonly used in dining tables. Stone provides a unique finish and look.

  1. Composite/MFD: Less solid and durable than metal or wood, composite or MDF materials are available in many finishes and are a budget-friendly option.
