The most popular shape for a coffee table is rectangular. Rectangular coffee tables look best in spacious living rooms. They’re typically paired with a sectional or a larger seating area. The rectangular shape provides a timeless look that blends in with almost any design aesthetic. If you have a smaller seating area, consider a rounded coffee table. Rounded tables are easier to maneuver around, and they don’t take up as much space.

Your coffee table should be slightly lower than the seat of your couch. Your table should be at a height that’s easily accessible while you’re relaxing on the couch. Measure from the floor to the seat of your couch and filter your coffee table search based on those dimensions. Your table should be one or two inches shorter than the measured height.

Rectangular coffee tables are typically larger than their rounded counterparts, making them perfect for living rooms with extra space.
