Loveseats

What is a loveseat, and is it different than a sofa? We’re here to answer that. Technically, a loveseat is a type of sofa; but unlike the traditional three-or-more-seated styles, this version is designed specifically to seat two (or less). The use of the word “love” in the name originates from the idea that its smaller size is more conducive to two people who don’t mind sitting in closer proximity to each other, such as a couple.
Because of its size, a loveseat is a perfect fit for small spaces, or used in larger rooms as a complement to a traditional sofa or armchairs. Read on to discover how to find just the right loveseat for your home.

Size

Though their design is intended for two (or one), the loveseat itself is available in a range of sizes to accommodate your space and needs. Because there is no one-size-fits-all standard length—other than knowing a loveseat is less long than a sofa—here are some average measurements to keep in mind

F.A.Q.

Are Loveseats Cheaper Than Couches?

Because loveseats are generally smaller than a full-size sofa, they often cost less. However, the cost of a loveseat or sofa depends on several factors. A high-end design, specialty materials such as leather, or additional features like built-in recliners can increase the price of either item. If you’re looking for a budget option, or need something to fit into a smaller space, a loveseat might be the better bet. Even the most affordable ones come in a variety of colors and designs.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to spend a bit more, high-end loveseats come in some very unique designs. They can be a great way to add a pop of personality to a smaller space or complement a bigger couch or armchairs for some extra seating in a larger living room.

Why Is it Called a Loveseat?

While many sofas have three or four seats, a loveseat is just big enough for two. It gets its name from the cozy proximity of two people sitting on either end.

Of course, loveseats come in a few sizes. They can be as small as a single-seater or nearly as large as a full-size sofa. The difference is that loveseats have only two cushions instead of three or four. A standard-sized loveseat is about 58 inches long, but they come as large as 72 inches if you’re looking to fill more space.

Should I Get a Loveseat or a Sofa for My Space?

Whether you purchase a loveseat or a sofa depends on the type of space you’re trying to fill and the aesthetic you’re looking for. Since they’re typically longer, sofas generally provide more seating. If you plan to have a lot of guests in the space or want more seating options, a sofa might work best. Sofas are also good for filling a larger space with a single piece of furniture.

Loveseats, however, are highly versatile. They can fit well in both large and small spaces. They also work well as part of a couch and loveseat set, providing plenty of seating and a cohesive design. In a room that doesn’t traditionally include a sofa, such as a bedroom or a home office, this type of seat may also add some comfort without taking up too much space.

You can also get a loveseat that fills multiple functions, such as a reclining loveseat that allows two people to kick back and relax together or a loveseat sleeper that includes a pull-out mattress for extra space when guests come to stay.
