F.A.Q.

What are the different types of cribs?

There are many different styles of cribs you can choose from, including:

Standard/traditional: These cribs have four standard sides and are designed to remain in place. Many have adjustable heights to raise and lower the mattress placement.

Convertible: Convertible cribs feature adjustable sides and can transition as your baby grows. They can turn into toddler beds with one dropped side or daybeds with one side removed.

Portable: These lightweight cribs are quick to assemble and help keep your baby secure as you travel. Some portable cribs have wheels, and most are made of softer material.

Compact: If your space is limited, you may prefer a compact crib. These cribs are shorter than traditional cribs, so they are more suited to newborns and infants.

Folding: Similar to portable cribs, folding cribs are easy to assemble and fold away when not in use. However, most folding cribs are made of wood or other solid materials.

Bassinet: These cribs typically have a hood or canopy on one end, although newer models may not have this feature. They are made of lightweight materials like mesh, plastic, or wicker and usually have handles or wheels.

What size mattress fits in a standard crib?

Crib mattresses are much smaller than standard mattresses. They measure 27 ¼ by 51 ⅝ inches and are designed solely for cribs. When choosing a mattress, you should ensure the shape fits the crib. This way, your baby has a secure sleeping place. Any gaps between the mattress and the crib’s sides could lead to an unsafe sleeping environment.

These mattresses should also be firm and have a 6-inch depth. Foam and coil springs are the two most common mattress materials.

Can cribs transition into toddler beds?

In many cases, yes. If you have a convertible crib, you can easily convert it into a toddler bed. Lower the front side and drop the mattress to transition the crib to fit your toddler.

For standard cribs, first ensure the sides are removable. If so, remove the front-facing side of the crib. Then, lower the mattress to toddler height. Once you’ve removed the side, install brackets and a guardrail to the front of the crib.
