Antique Bidjar Persian Wagireh Rug, late 19th century - Silk - This opulent Bijar is almost jewel-like in its rich and elegant detail. The drawing of the design with its medallions and vinescrolls of arabesques is remarkably faithful to classical forerunners. The clarity of the color in rich terracotta, aubergine, soft blue, and pale apricot is extraordinary. The dramatic effect of the single black field medallion plays beautifully against the black-ground border of fine vines and flowers, while the two ivory minor borders echo the ivory medallions at the top and bottom of the field. A masterpiece of delicacy and harmonious counterpoint.
