Folio 11 3/8 x 7¼in. (28.8 x 18.6cm.); Miniature 6 3/8 x 4 7/8in. (16 x 10cm.)

Notes: The artist produced several similar compositions of bearded sheikhs and elderly men seated thoughtfully in a landscape in the 1620s. Most striking in its comparison to the present lot is a portrait of a bearded sheikh with a distinctive nose dated 14 Dhu al-Hijja 1031 (21 October 1622). He appears again leaning on a cushion and dated 21 Jumada II 1035 (20 March 1626) in the Bibliothèque Nationale, (Canby, S.R.:The Rebellious Reformer, The drawings and paintings of Riza-yi Abbasi of Isfahan, pp. 137-144)
