The Oliveira Three Medallion Shirvan

Size: 189 x 123 cm.
Region: West Asia > Caucasus > Northeast Caucasus > Shirvan
Date/Period: Late 19th century
Materials: Soft wool, natural dyes
Structure: Knots: 59 (v) x 33 (h) = 1,947 / dm2
Condition: Very good, with good pile all over.
Full Description: A very nice blue Shirvan rug with a vertical row of three lozenge medallions with geometricized flowers inside. At the lozenges' ends "a radial ornament can be seen which recalls old Egyptian and Persian royal insignia" (Ulrich Schurmann, Caucasian Rugs, Poolesville, 1990, pp. 196). The main border is a traditional ‘crab' border design. The small diamond border is an older border type.

Size: 227 x 137 cm.
Region: West Asia > Caucasus > Northeast Caucasus > Shirvan
Date/Period: 19th century, late
Structure: Knots: 53 (v) x 26 (h) = 1,378 / dm2
Condition: Excellent, with soft wool and a good pile, with only a very small area where the dyes used for the black color corroded.
Full Description: A very attractive Caucasian Shirvan rug, with three medallions, each containing a large hooked motif with a geometric floral rendition at its centre. The beautiful colours of this rug, along with its main border, make it a magnificent specimen of antique Caucasian weaving.

Antique Shirvan Stepped Medallion Rug

Period / Date: 19th century, second half (1850 - 1899)
Condition: Very Good
Notes: This is a wonderful example of what I am calling a Shirvan Stepped Medallion. The "S" border is very similar to other Caucasian Rugs. I suspect that this is the product of a long line of design evolution that includes dragon carpets and 18th century sunburst carpets.
