How tall should a nightstand be?

Find a nightstand the same height or slightly taller than your bed. While a nightstand serves an aesthetic purpose in your bedroom, its main function is to be a place to put the items you need, like an alarm clock or reading lamp .

What accessories are best for nightstands?

This varies based on personal preferences. Do you like an old-fashioned alarm clock, or would a charging dock for your phone be more convenient? Would a framed family photo help you to feel more comfortable in your space? Choose pieces that make you feel at peace and help you start and end your days.

What size lamp is best for a nightstand?

While this might come down to personal taste, most people should avoid lamps more than 30 inches tall. They'll look too big and will become an eyesore. The diameter of the lamp’s base depends on the size of your nightstand and how much room you need to leave room for the other items placed on the nightstand.

Nightstands are a key component of your sleeping sanctuary, providing a dedicated space to keep your essentials close at hand. From lamps and books to glasses and alarm clocks, nightstands keep your items organized and within reach.

Consider factors like height, size, and storage capacities to maximize the utility of your nightstand. Take accurate measurements of the space available on each side of your bed, so your nightstand looks proportional to your bed. Nightstands should be placed within three to six inches from the side of the bed. This allows room for bedding and keeps your nightstand from being jostled. Measure the height of your mattress. Your nightstand should not be too tall or short when aligned with your mattress. Align the top of your mattress with your nightstand or slightly lower. This provides a seamless surface for you to place items. Decide which items you need on top of your nightstand. The tabletop surface of your nightstand needs to be large enough to hold your bedside items. Standard nightstands measure between 12”– 30” deep. If you would like to keep large items on your nightstand, or if your table lamp has a large base, choose a nightstand with a deeper depth.
