Definition of Mattress

Meaning of the Term as it Pertains to Mattresses

What is a Mattress?

A large piece of bedroom furniture, a mattress is used to support and comfort the body while sleeping. Mattresses are usually classified by the materials they use to provide body support. The most commonly used forms of support include metal coils, memory foam, and latex. Chambers of air or water are other forms of mattress support still used today. A typical mattress should last at least seven years, and high-end mattresses tend last 20 years or more.

Mattresses commonly include soft foams or stuffing to make sleep surfaces more comfortable. Manufacturers adjust the amount of surface cushioning to make mattresses feel as soft or as firm as customers desire. Mattress makers also produce models in varying sizes in order to accommodate the spatial needs of consumers.
