Definition of Bonding

Meaning of the Term as it Pertains to Mattresses

What is Bonding?

Bonding is the act of binding two or more layers of comfort materials. Mattress manufactures typically bond multiple sheets of foam to create plush, multi-layered sleep surfaces. Mattresses that incorporate bonded materials typically use flexible polyurethane foam but may consist of various other types of foam, as well. Bonding may also be used to finish seams.

Innerspring mattresses frequently use bonded materials for cushioning at the top layers. Memory foam and latex mattresses may have bonded layers or have layers free for addition or removal in the manufacturing process. Some mattresses may consist entirely of bonded materials and polyester fill.
