What Is a Mattress Foundation?

Purpose

Mattress foundations ultimately extend the life of your mattress and supports it by evenly distributing weight and eliminating sagging. Though they serve a similar purpose, foundations have recently started to replace traditional box-springs. While box-springs are made with metal, as the name would suggest, foundations are generally constructed of wood. A strong wood foundation is equally as supportive as a box-spring containing metal. On average, they stand between 5 and 9 inches tall, though shorter options are available, and are perfect for use with a variety of mattress types, including latex, innerspring, memory foam, and airbeds.
