When I first met my husband, he lived in a typical bachelor pad. His overall decor consisted of a television and an old leather sofa a friend had given him. Like most women, I was excited to add my womanly touch and get some “real” furniture. Our first purchase? A cocktail table.
We chose a classic coffee table with a cherry finish and nickel hardware. We probably spent more than we should have, assuming we would have it for many years. The problem was our perfect coffee table became an eyesore. We didn’t take into account that it was way too big for our small apartment. But we learned a lesson: There is more to buying a cocktail table – or any piece of furniture – than looks.
Before you buy a new cocktail table, make sure you have a clear idea of the right size and shape for your space.
Cocktail Table Size
The right size cocktail table will give your living room an overall balanced look. If you choose a cocktail table that is too small, it may get swallowed up by the room. The opposite is also true: A a table that is too large can take over the room. You want a table that will compliment your living room layout. Make sure you leave enough room around the cocktail table for leg space and walking.
Keep in mind the length and height of your other furniture. You don’t want your new cocktail table to be too high or low compared to where people sit. Make sure it aligns with the seat cushions or is slightly lower.
There are many different shapes to choose from when choosing your new furniture. Round- and oval-shaped tables tend to look better in smaller rooms. Plus they are easier to maneuver around if space is an issue. Square or rectangular tables are better for a larger seating area and can be the main focal point of the room. But keep in mind: If you have small children, pointed corners can be a hazard, and a round cocktail table or a coffee table ottoman may be a better choice.
Since there are many different accent tables to choose from, you really want to love the style and design of the cocktail table you bring into your home. But remember to keep these considerations in mind when you make your purchase. The right choice will help ensure your enjoyment for years to come.
