The Truth About Mattress Myths

Monday, January 7, 2013 by Norma Gaffin

Shopping for a mattress set is very different from shopping for other furniture for your home. For mattresses, while appearance is always something we react to, the underlying construction and materials are truly of the utmost importance. It is important to be informed when buying your new mattress set. We’ve taken some of the most common myths about mattresses and are giving you the facts so you can purchase your next mattress with confidence!

Myth: The firmer the mattress, the better.

Truth: A firm mattress won’t necessarily give you a better or more comfortable night’s sleep. You will get the best sleep from the mattress type that is most comfortable for you. When shopping for mattresses, remember that the top of the mattress provides pressure relief and the bottom provides back support – you need to figure out the right combination of back support and pressure relief that works for you.

Myth: The more coils in your mattress, the better.

Truth: In most cases, today’s mattresses are designed with enough coils in them to provide years of support. To have a number in mind, especially if you are looking at lower end mattress sets, any number above 390 coils in a queen mattress is plenty.

Myth: The price of the mattress is proportionate to its quality.

Truth: Other than the cheapest mattresses, price does little to indicate whether or not the mattress will be right for you. Quality mattresses are available at a number of price points, and once you have identified your personal needs and wants, you should be able to find the right mattress for you at an affordable price.

Myth: Fabrics like silk, wool and cashmere make a mattress more comfortable.

Truth: When used in mattresses, these expensive materials are usually found in the mattress’s upper padding. Once you cover the mattress with a mattress pad and sheets, you can’t feel this added luxury, which really only adds to the price.

How to Choose the Right Children’s Beds

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Your baby is growing up, and so are his needs at bedtime. Where once a crib or toddler bed was a safe place for slumber, your child needs a “real” bed that’s big and sturdy enough for his big dreams and growing body. But where do you start?

There Are Options Beyond the Twin Bed and Mattress

While you will most likely purchase a twin bed and mattress for your child, consider the size and space of the bedroom. If there is enough room, you may want to purchase a full, or double, bed from the start.
A full bed will definitely last into adulthood for your child, but you can rest assured that a twin bed will be adequate for his current needs.

Choose the right children's beds - Furniture.com - Jackie Kids Room Furniture CollectionKid Bed Options

When choosing the design of your child’s bed, first you’ll need to decide between a bed that looks like a child’s bed and one that is designed to grow with your child. While a beautiful princess or scurvy pirate ship bed will make your little one’s dreams come true, they don’t have the lifespan a more neutral design might have. It comes down to whether or not you will be willing to replace the furniture in a few years. Once you decide on this aspect of the bed's design, you have some other options to choose from:

Kids Bunk Beds: Chances are, your child already wants bunk beds, so you need to decide if, as a parent, this is something you want. They can be a great space-saving option if you have two kids sharing a room. But there are a number of safety issues to consider. Check out our previous post, “To Bunk Up or Not? The Pros and cons of Bunk Beds in Kids Rooms,” for more information.

Loft Bed: A loft bed is just the top half of a bunk bed. What it does is double the space of your child’s room by adding a “second floor” for sleeping. Sometimes the area underneath comes with a desk or futon for a studying or sitting area. This is one option for creating more space in a smaller room.

Bed with Trundle: Beds with trundles underneath are a great option for a child who might have sleepover guests. A second bed pulls out from underneath your child’s regular bed. You may also find a bed with trundle storage underneath. In both cases, the bed or drawer should easily pull out for your child’s use.

Captain’s Bed: Captain’s beds offer a lot of underbed storage through drawers that are all attached. This is a classic option for children’s rooms, because of all the extra storage space it affords. Captain’s beds are another great option for creating additional space in your kid’s room because of its efficient use of space.

A Quality Mattress

Don’t forget that your growing child needs a durable mattress to support him in his slumber. Whether you’ve decided on a twin mattress or a full, a bunk bed that requires a board or a more traditional bed that requires a mattress and boxspring set, you have a number of options as far as the types of materials the mattress can be made of. This post explains the different types of mattresses available can help you in your research.

Getting your child his first bed is a big step for him and you. We hope this helps you start the process.

Do You Need a New Mattress? Answer These 7 Questions

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Perhaps you have heard the conventional wisdom that a mattress can last 10 years, but the reality is closer to five to seven years. A number of factors affect a mattress’s lifespan, including who is using it and how often. For example, a mattress regularly slept on by two people will not last as long as a mattress in a guestroom that only gets used three or four times per year.

If you’re debating whether or not it’s time to replace your mattress, here are 7 questions to help guide you.

1. Can you see wear and tear on your mattress?

Take a look at your mattress without the bedding. If you can actually see that your mattress is worn with indentations, sagging and lumps, then it is time to get a new one.

2. Are you waking up with aches and pains?

This is a good indication that your mattress has seen better days and is no longer giving you the support you need. And if you only experience this discomfort after lying on your bed, that’s the clincher.

3. Can you hear your mattress?

If your mattress creaks when you lie down on it, then it’s time to trade it in. Just be sure that it is the mattress creaking and not your bed frame.

4. How are the edges holding up?

If your mattress’s edges easily give way to small amounts of pressure, then the edge support is failing, which is essential to the mattress holding its shape.

5. Are you suddenly waking up with morning allergies?

If you have an inner spring mattress, an abundance of dust mite buildup can happen over time, causing sneezing, coughing and stuffiness. If you encounter this specific issue, you may want your next mattress to be latex or memory foam, which offer protection from dust mites.

6. Do you wake up in the middle of the night?

If this is a new occurrence, your mattress may be to blame, and the discomfort is disrupting your sleep.

7. Overall, how do you feel in the morning?

If you are feeling less than refreshed, your mattress may very well be the reason. If you’re not sure and it is possible, try sleeping on another mattress for a few days – either in your guest room or when you’re on vacation. If you feel better in the morning after sleeping elsewhere, it is time to go mattress shopping!

How Your Mattress Set Can Help You and Your Spouse Get a Better Night's Sleep -- Together

Friday, July 20, 2012 by Betsy Miller

It’s something you’re probably hesitant to discuss with your doctor, therapist or even close friends. And you’re definitely not talking to your spouse about it.

The problem? You can’t get a good night’s sleep with your significant other in the same bed. Every toss and turn wakes you, or in the morning you have a sore back from the super-soft pillowtop mattress set she talked you into buying. You're worried you'll end up like a 1950s TV couple with twin beds in the master suite.

Thankfully, modern mattress technology has come to the rescue! Discover these mattress types that can help you sleep together better:

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses, which all major bedding manufacturers now make, have temperature-sensitive material that provides a custom fit to your body. The benefits are two-fold: the comfort reduces your tossing and turning, and it creates motion separation. Your motion won't be felt by your significant other and vice versa!

Dual Comfort Mattresses

Traditional innerspring (coil) mattresses are still the most popular models sold today and offer the widest range of firmness available. Now, two different firmness levels can be in one mattress. Simmons mattress collections include a number of models where one side is firm and the other is plush. Some models even come with pillowtops but still have the dual firmness support. And to top it off – literally – you can even find dual comfort mattress sets that have additional memory foam in the pillowtop to enhance motion separation.

With these new types in mind, you're now prepared to find the solution to a better's night sleep - for the both of you.

How to Choose the Best Mattress Set for Your Sleeping Position

Monday, July 2, 2012 by Betsy Miller

Shopping for a new mattress set is by no means easy. If you’re like me, it’s akin to shoe shopping: The shoes look cute in the store and feel comfortable for that 60-second try-on walk, but give me two weeks and I’m cursing them for rubbing me in all the wrong places and relegate them to the back of the closet. However, with the mattress set, I don't have any options -- I’ll have to sleep on it for five years or more before I can afford to buy a new one!

While the mattess salesperson may not admit that you should choose your mattress based on anything other than how it feels to her, there are some guidelines you can use based on  what type of mattress set works best for your preferred sleeping position.

Side Sleepers

Sleeping on your side is the most common position, and the one most recommended by sleep experts. But it’s not pefect – it leaves you vulnerable to pressure points in the hip and shoulder areas. Side sleepers need a mattress set that will distribute support along the full length of their bodies in order to minimize the pressure. For that reason, the best choices are plush innerspring, latex foam or memory foam mattresses, which combine softness with support.

Back Sleepers

For back sleepers, support is important because of your body's natural arch, but this needs to be balanced by a softer feel to allow the back to rest comfortably. A pillowtop mattress with firm support will give the necessary combination of soft and firm.

Stomach Sleepers

Sleeping on your stomach also requires unique support to keep your spine aligned and prevent the body from sinking too much into the mattress. An innerspring mattress set, preferably firm, will likely be your most comfortable option.

You deserve a better night's sleep, and matching your mattress type to your sleeping position can help guarantee it!

Advice for Buying a Mattress Set: Understand the Types Available

Friday, June 22, 2012 by Betsy Miller

You’re ready! You’ve decided now is the time to buy a new mattress set. Whatever your reason – perhaps your living situation has changed or you’re just tired of the lumps and want a better night’s sleep – congratulations! We spend one-third of our lives sleeping, and investing in a quality mattress set is a smart move for your mental and physical well-being.

If it’s been a while since you’ve shopped for a mattress set, you may not be prepared for all the options that await you. Here’s an easy-to-understand overview of the three main types of mattresses available today and their unique features.

Innerspring (Coil) Mattresses

An innerspring mattress consists of a spring core, which provides the support, and a comfort layer. A variety of materials can be used for the comfort layer, including memory foam and latex form, and many innerspring mattresses have a pillowtop layer as well.

The key benefits of innerspring mattresses include:

  • Wide range of options in firmness.
  • More affordable price points.
  • Feels familiar – they're what most of us have been sleeping on all our lives.

Memory Foam Mattresses

A memory foam mattress has a core of visco-elastic memory foam, rather than innersprings, to provide both support and comfort. Your body sinks into memory foam, distributing your weight over the surface of the mattress to relieve pressure points.

The main benefits of memory foam include:

  • A custom fit to your body.
  • Aligns your neck and spine, reducing pressure points.
  • Reduced motion transfer since the foam absorbs motion.

Latex Foam Mattresses

A latex foam mattress has a central core of latex foam, as opposed to innersprings. The material's unique properties provide excellent support and comfort. The pressure relief is similar to memory foam but is accompanied by a buoyant, floating feeling as the foam supports the contours  of your body.

Other unique benefits of latex foam include:

  • Hypoallergenic – latex is naturally antimicrobial, dust-mite resistant and mildew-proof.
  • Soft yet supportive, it aligns the spine and reduces pressure points.
  • Breathable and resilient, which prevents heat buildup.

Remember: Buying a new mattress set is an investment, so don’t rush. Be patient and consider all your options to find the perfect one for you!
