10 Tips for Decorating Your Home on a Budget

Tuesday, September 25, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Nothing turns a space into a home like filling it with items and furnishings you love, assembled in a style that is truly your own. Whether you’re moving into a new home or redecorating the one you already have, this is a very exciting time that can really improve your quality of life. But it’s also a time when your wants may not align with what your wallet can allow.

But don’t worry – you can have a beautiful home without breaking your budget. Our 10 tips cover everything from setting your spending limits to multifuctional pieces to help  you get the most for your money. So get started!

Tip #1: Create a budget, either for the entire living space or by individual room. Then make a list of what you have, what you need and what you’d like to upgrade. This will help you to prioritize the project and may shed light on the fact that you could repurpose your nightstand as an end table for the time being.

Tip #2: Brainstorm on how you would like to decorate each room, and then narrow down each space to one or two solid ideas. This way, all of your furniture and accessories can work toward these primary themes for a cohesive look.

Choose a bed and then build the rest of the room later on - Furniture.com - Loft Bedroom CollectionTip #3: You don’t have to furnish your entire home at once. Versatile pieces, such as dining chairs, can float between rooms -- from dining to the home office, to the living room when you’re entertaining guests.

Tip #4: Look for a beautiful bed to be your bedroom’s centerpiece and make the room feel complete. You can add everything else-- dressers, chests and nightstands -- over time. And don’t be afraid to mix and match -- an eclectic mix will make your home cozy and unique.

Tip #5: Think outside the house when it comes to decorative accents. You’ll bring unique style to your home by decorating with garden ornaments, architectural elements and old building parts. They’re often cheap and always distinctive. Check salvage yards and antique stores for great finds.

Tip #6: Use a bookcase in your dining room to store and display china and serving pieces. Later, when you upgrade to a china cabinet or sideboard, you can easily use the bookcase in another area of your home.

Tip #7: Create your own artwork. You can frame anything, from a beautiful leaf to a photo from last year’s wall calendar, and voila, you have art! For inexpensive frames, look in discount stores for framed prints. Remove the back (needle-nose pliers are terrific for pulling out large staples) and replace what was in the frame with your own masterpiece.

A smaller dining table can be used in another room in the future - Furniture.com - Stephanie Dining CollectionTip #8: Choose a dining room table that will give you choices down the line. For example, choosing a smaller scale table or one with a removable expansion leaf might allow you to use the table in your kitchen or another room should you decide to replace it.

Tip #9: Go ahead and accept hand-me-down furnishings, but only if you really like them. An unwanted dinosaur won’t inspire your imagination the way an empty room can. Don’t be afraid to live with the open space for a while and consider the room you’d really like to create.

Tip #10: Sell furnishings you don’t like or no longer have a need for at a consignment shop or online. Then you can use the money you make for the furniture you really want!

5 Decorating Tips for Living Large in Smaller Spaces

Monday, September 24, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Are you trying to get the biggest look possible from a small room? Whether it’s because you’re just starting out in a New York City apartment or you’ve recently downsized because your children moved out, having space at a premium can present challenges when it comes to furnishing and decorating your home. Here are five tips that can help:

SLoveseats are a great sofa alternative in small living rooms - Furniture.com - Saddle II Loveseattart with Furniture Scale

Your furnishings need to fit the space you have. If, for example, you have a small living room, an oversized sofa may not be the best choice – it could completely dwarf the room. If you love the piece’s oversized look, perhaps a loveseat or chair from the collection could bring the same charm to your space but at a more suitable size.

Light Colors Work Wonders

Choose a light color palette to make the room appear bigger and airier. Begin with light-colored furniture, window treatments, accessories and bedding, and then drape the walls, floors and ceilings in a similar palette.

Choose Artwork Wisely

You know how set designers use receding perspectives, like a pathway to a distant point, to make the stage appear to go on forever? You can use the same trick in your home! Hang pictures of landscapes or abstracts with vanishing or receding perspective to give the eye a greater sense of depth.

Neaten Up

Keep your room tidy and clutter-free! Give eyes an easy path to absorb the combination of all elements. Items haphazardly scattered in the room will break up your decor, making the space seem smaller than it is.

Mirror Image

Place a mirror on the wall, opposite an architectural detail or a prized piece of furniture. This will give the impression of an expanded room, while doubling the visual impact of something you love. You can also use this trick to replicate a favorite view within your room.

Furniture Trends by State: South

Thursday, September 13, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Being a national online home furnishings e-commerce website that works with local retailers you know and trust, we get a lot of insights into furniture trends from across the country. This series will give you the 411 on hot styles, looks and pieces by state.

Casual Contemporary Living Room Furniture is popular in the South - Furniture.com - Saddle Living Room CollectionHere, we take a look at furniture trends in our most popular Southern states by sales.

Virginia Furniture Trends

In Virginia, upholstered furniture in modern patterns and silhouettes are our  top sellers, followed closely behind by casual contemporary upholstered living room furniture. And the love of contemporary furniture extends to the bedroom, where clean lines and deep wood finishes dominate.

Maryland Furniture Trends

Living room furniture tastes in Maryland are quite eclectic, encompassing casual contemporary as well as more formal pieces you’d expect to see in a parlor. Microfiber and leather, which tend to be the more durable furniture materials, are the most popular.

Texas Furniture Trends

While wood was the material of choice for dining room and bedroom furniture, leather was surprisingly absent from the living room furniture purchases in Texas. Modern, clean lines and streamlined looks prevailed in most of the furnishings sold here.

South Carolina Furniture Trends

South Carolina furniture shoppers are not afraid to mix things up! The most popular furnishing collections here included a mix of materials, like upholstered sofas with exposed wooden trim or wooden beds with quilted leather headboards, for example. The colors of choice were earthy browns and goes-with-everything black.

Tennessee Furniture Trends

Casual contemporary furniture prevails in Tennessee – a mix of well-made comfortable furnishings that are beautiful and livable for every day. As for colors, brown and beige upholstery is paired with chocolate wood finishes to complete the easy down-to-earth look.

Furniture Trends by State: Midwest

Monday, September 10, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Being a national online home furnishings e-commerce website that works with local retailers you know and trust, we get a lot of insights into furniture trends from across the country. This series will give you the 411 on hot styles, looks and pieces by state.

HMidwest Furniture Trends - Furniture.com - Mystic Living Room Furniture Collectionere, we take a look at furniture trends in our most popular Midwestern states by sales.

Illinois Furniture Trends

Furniture trends in Illinois culminate in a combination of contemporary sophistication with a touch of casual living that is so very today. Of course, with Chicago’s rich history in architecture and furniture design, these tastes come as no surprise. Browns and trendy grays reign as the top choices for living room sofas and chairs, and wood is the prominent material for both bedroom furniture and dining room furniture.

Indiana Furniture Trends

Contemporary, modern furnishings are our top sellers across all room categories in Indiana. Trendy gray upholstery is the number one choice for living room furniture, and modern updates of the classic sleigh bed design are tops for bedrooms. The majority of dining room sets bought here in Indiana were sleek, modern counter-height dinettes.

Ohio Furniture Trends

Ohio furniture shoppers are looking for large-scale pieces, but they are in no way overlooking the details! Many of the most popular pieces, from large, dramatic beds to delicate yet refined table lamps, have intricate designs indicating a care in the craftsmanship from the person who brings the pieces home. Carved wood and capiz shell inlay are two examples of the more detailed decorative work popular in Ohio.

Missouri Furniture Trends

In Missouri, furniture shoppers are looking for the perfect combination of comfort and urban flair. Once again, we’ve seen gray as the color of choice for upholstered furniture. But, of course, nothing beats the old standby of a leather sofa – especially if it has an updated silhouette and incorporates all the customary comforts.

Kansas Furniture Trends

Furniture tastes in Kansas seem to embody what comes to mind for many people when they think of America’s Heartland. The most popular furnishings sold in Kansas are all sturdy, well-made pieces in traditional, comfortable designs with clean lines. Practical materials, like wood and microfiber, sell well – chosen for both their beautiful appearance and their durability.

A blend of woodland browns, rustic reds, mossy greens and warm cinnamon reflect today's popular decorating trends. The wide-scale overlapping shapes offer modern eye appeal. Furniture Trends by State: Northeast

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Being a national online home furnishings e-commerce website that works with local retailers to bring you affordable furniture with excellent customer service, we get a lot of insights into furniture trends from across the country. This series will give you the 411 on hot styles, looks and pieces by state. Here, we take a look at furniture trends in our most popular Northeastern states by sales.

Popular Furniture in the Northeast US - Furniture.com - Bordeaux II Leather Living Room Furniture CollectionNew York Furniture Trends

In 2012, we’ve seen a return to the traditional in furniture tastes for New York. Think dark, sumptuous woods and ornately carved details. Our most popular sellers there have been stately dining room sets and overstuffed living room furniture – all classic and very masculine.

Pennsylvania Furniture Trends

Leather living room furnishings are very popular in Pennsylvania, especially in traditional designs and dark brown or black. Formal-looking sofas inspired by the Victorian time period but updated for today’s use are also sought after.

Massachusetts Furniture Trends

Massachusetts’s furniture trends tend to run a little eclectic, with a preference tending toward more colors, especially for living rooms. Here, furniture aficionados chose to brighten their living rooms up with white leather and upholstery in shades of plum and rust. Additionally, padded leather headboards are also hot, whether set in a more traditional or very modern looking bed.

New Jersey Furniture Trends

In New Jersey, furniture shoppers put a premium on comfort! Recliners and sectionals are very popular, and the style leans toward casual contemporary, sometimes with a touch of modern. Think ample seating and deep, soft cushions.

Connecticut Furniture Trends

The counter height dining room furniture trend is going strong in Connecticut, where we see furniture shoppers both buy complete dinette sets or create their own. And styles run the gamut from Shaker-inspired cherry wood finishes to Italianate high-gloss blacks.

To Bunk Up or Not? The Pros and Cons of Bunk Beds in Kids Rooms

Thursday, August 30, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Bunks Beds with Storage and Stairs - Furniture.com - Sundance Ful/Twin Bunk NedsBunks beds are quite possibly the most coveted piece of bedroom furniture for anyone in the grade-school set. Having bunk beds in your room says a lot about a kid, including:

  • I’m always ready for a sleepover.
  • I like adventure!
  • No way I’m afraid of heights.
  • Give me a sheet and 1 minute, and I can construct a fort that will blow your mind!

But, of course, it’s not all fun and games when deciding on the perfect kids bedroom furniture for your children. Parents need to weigh the pros and cons to decide if bunk beds will be the best fit for their kids room and lifestyle. These insights, many from parents, should help you make your decision.

In Favor of Bunk Beds

When it comes to checks in the “Yes” column for bunk beds, fun is definitely a priority – after all, you only get to be a kid once. Bunk beds:

  • Create more space in the kids room.
  • Allow parents to give their children what they had wanted when they were kids.
  • Provide additional flexibility for sleepovers, whether your pint-sized guests use one of the bunks or an under-the-bed trundle.
  • Look cool.
  • Offer a great structure for imaginative play, like forts, puppet shows and more.

Considerations When Purchasing Bunk Beds

But even all the fun of bunk beds can have its drawbacks. Surprisingly, they’re not all about safety concerns but also the inconveniences bunk beds cause parents. Buying bunk beds also mean:

  • More reports of injuries related to bunk beds, which equals more worry for parents.
  • You need a specific type of mattress for the top bunk, because a regular mattress may be too thick and can impede the safety the railings and ladder provide.
  • Regular arguments over who gets the top bunk.
  • Difficulty making the bed on the top bunk and even more when it’s time to change the sheets.
  • Having to watch little house guests more closely.
  • A shorter window of use as compared to other beds – children under 6 should not use a top bunk, and by the time kids are in middle school, they are starting to outgrow them.
  • You need to regularly inspect the entire bed’s assembly to be sure the screws are tight, the bed is sturdy and the ladder is correctly attached.

Bunk Beds Require Rules

If you decide bunk beds are right for you and your home, you can put some rules in place in your home to encourage safe use and a good time. Here are some additional ideas, taken from Catherine Crawford’s post on The Stir:

  • Have guardrails on both sides of the upper bunk, even if one side is against a wall, with gaps no larger than 3.5 inches.
  • Keep things like ceiling fans in mind when deciding where to put the bunk beds.
  • Use a night light to help illuminate ladders in the dark.
  • No horsing around on the bunk beds!

Love This Room: The Carrington II Bedroom

Monday, August 27, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Carrington II Storage Bedroom Collection - Furniture.comWhat goes on in interior designers' minds when they're decorating homes? I’m sure you've wondered this yourself while watching HGTV or leafing through a decor magazine. With our Love This Room series, we’re going to let you in and explain how the design in these rooms creates a cohesive look you could recreate in your own home.

Let's take a closer look at our Carrington II bedroom furniture collection and what makes it so special.

The Espresso Finish Steals the Show

Our Carrington II storage bed is a contemporary take on the classic sleigh bed. The traditional look is lightened up with off-the-floor styling, open slat details and the absence of a footboard. And while you admire the beauty, don’t miss the practicality. The underbed storage drawers provide an additional place for you to store items without taking up additional space, and, since it is a platform bed, there is no need for a boxspring.

The entire collection is full of showpieces, like the curved features and the silver pulls. But the star is the rich espresso finish. The deep brown of the wood on the storage bed, nightstand and dresser/mirror, with its glossy sheen, demands attention. It’s no wonder we’ve designed the room to make this rich hue the focal point, by echoing the color in some accent bedding and choosing other decorative elements in a natural palette that lets the wood shine.

Looking to Nature to Create a Harmonious Design

When designing a peaceful room, like the master bedroom suite, you can never go wrong pulling color combinations from nature. We decided to treat the bedroom furniture as the focus and added shades of green and brown around it to create a serene setting. We set the bed on our Jessamine area rug. Its leafy pattern and earth-tone colorway coordinate with the bold wall art of a natural subject. To tie everything together, we chose shiny accent pieces that echo the casegoods’ hardware.

We hope this peek into why we love this room helps you think about your bedroom and creating your own peaceful retreat in a whole new way!

3 Tips for Creating a Relaxing Master Bedroom

Monday, August 13, 2012 by Stacy Ward

We all deserve a place where we can escape our daily stress and enjoy some well-deserved rest. What better place to do this than your master bedroom? Unfortunately, we often neglect our bedrooms, because we are too distracted by our busy lives. But you don’t need to spend a ton of time to transform your bedroom into a calming retreat. A few small updates and changes can alter the entire feel of your room. Here are 3 tips for creating a perfect master bedroom getaway:

Bedroom furniture, Furniture.com, Granada Bedroom1. Bed and Linens: You know that feeling you get when you first walk into a hotel room and you just want to fall onto the bed? Create that same feeling in your own bedroom. Your bed should be the room's focal point. You want your bed to stand out and be warm and welcoming -- keep that in mind when choosing your bedroom furniture. A stylish headboard and frame along with complementary nightstands will set the mood for the entire room. Once you have selected your ideal bedroom furniture, choose  linens to help create a finished look. Make sure your comforter is both comfortable and visually appealing. Adding sheets with a high thread count  will feel luxurious to the touch. And lastly, show personal style with accent pillows! There are many different styles and patterns to choose from, so you're sure to find a perfect match for your bedroom design!

2. Lighting: When most people picture a relaxing room, they think of soft lighting. Lighting should be both decorative and functional. When choosing overhead fixtures, opt for ones that give off a soft and warm light. Although bright lighting can be useful, it does not create a relaxing environment. Lamps placed on a dresser or nightstand, or a freestanding floor lamp, will help set a calming ambiance while enhancing the room's decor. Adding dimmers will let you adjust the lighting based on your needs: low levels during calm moments and bright lighting the rest of the time.

Nightstand for Master Bedroom - Furniture.com - Manhattan nightstand3. Declutter: Nothing creates a more stressful space than clutter. Piles of clothes, paperwork and  miscellaneous items can create a distracting environment. Decluttering your bedroom can be done in two simple steps. First, throw away the things you don’t need or use anymore. If you have not worn a piece of clothing in over a year, it’s a safe bet you won’t in the future. The second step is to find storage for whatever's left. Assign everything a spot to help you keep the room looking clean in the future. Pack away seasonal items so you have room for your current clothes in your closet, chest or dresser. Put everyday items, like glasses or reading materials, in your nightstand.  Buy storage bins that are long and short enough to fit under your bed. This is a lot of wasted space if you don’t use it. Decluttering is one simple tip that plays a major role in creating a calming environment. Best of all, it will only cost you a little time and some energy but not a lot of money!

3 Furniture Tips For Small-Scale Living

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 by Betsy Miller

Many homes call for smaller-scale furniture -- Chicago and New York apartments, historic houses in New England, vacation condos in Florida, etc. -- but that doesn't mean the design aesthetic has to be small, too. Small space design is all about making the space feel larger. In general, furniture that is simply styled, low and lean will provide an open and airy feeling. Here are three practical tips for how you can decorate your small living space to have big style.

accent chair, armless chair - Furniture.com - Sahara Accent ChairFlexible Furnishings

Versatile furniture that can be rearranged on a whim, like a sofa with reversible chaise, is invaluable. Such living room furniture lets you create unique seating arrangements to match your needs. Another option is to have multiple smaller pieces. For example, a loveseat and two accent chairs, will give you more options in arranging seating than a sofa alone. Choosing stylish armless chairs will make the best use of a smaller space.

Think Outside the Box

Small space living requires resourcefulness and looking at furniture in different ways. The perfectly scaled dresser for your bedroom may be in the kids' furniture department. Today, many kids' bedroom collections have a more grown-up style to transition with the child as he grows. You'll still be able to find furnishings with a clean, modern look that would fit in with your other bedroom furniture. Don't let labels limit you -- if it works for your space, that's all that matters!

storage bed, queen bed - Furniture.com - Lakeshore Queen Storage BedFewer Pieces, Better Budget

An unexpected fringe benefit of small space living is that you'll need fewer pieces so you may be able to stretch your budget to include a splurge or two. One such splurge is also a good investment: a bed with storage drawers.  When you live in a home with limited closet space – typical of those New York and Chicago apartments mentioned above – furniture with built-in storage is a huge plus. Beds with storage come in many different styles today, from modern to more traditional. While a storage bed may cost more than other styles, it will prove invaluable not only in a small home, but any home -- there's no such thing as too much storage!

How Your Mattress Set Can Help You and Your Spouse Get a Better Night's Sleep -- Together

Friday, July 20, 2012 by Betsy Miller

It’s something you’re probably hesitant to discuss with your doctor, therapist or even close friends. And you’re definitely not talking to your spouse about it.

The problem? You can’t get a good night’s sleep with your significant other in the same bed. Every toss and turn wakes you, or in the morning you have a sore back from the super-soft pillowtop mattress set she talked you into buying. You're worried you'll end up like a 1950s TV couple with twin beds in the master suite.

Thankfully, modern mattress technology has come to the rescue! Discover these mattress types that can help you sleep together better:

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses, which all major bedding manufacturers now make, have temperature-sensitive material that provides a custom fit to your body. The benefits are two-fold: the comfort reduces your tossing and turning, and it creates motion separation. Your motion won't be felt by your significant other and vice versa!

Dual Comfort Mattresses

Traditional innerspring (coil) mattresses are still the most popular models sold today and offer the widest range of firmness available. Now, two different firmness levels can be in one mattress. Simmons mattress collections include a number of models where one side is firm and the other is plush. Some models even come with pillowtops but still have the dual firmness support. And to top it off – literally – you can even find dual comfort mattress sets that have additional memory foam in the pillowtop to enhance motion separation.

With these new types in mind, you're now prepared to find the solution to a better's night sleep - for the both of you.

3 Tips on Teens, Bedroom Furniture & Coexisting at Home

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

We recently had a coworker’s son, Justin Mount, visiting the office for the day, and, of course, we put him to work. Below, he shares some ideas on how today’s teens feel about furniture and their bedrooms. Perhaps his insights and tips might help you and your own teen-aged child find a peaceful middle ground when it comes to the house rules, kids rooms and common living spaces.

Kids Rooms Furniture, Teen Rooms - Furniture.com - Harley Kids BedroomAt home, comfort is the most important aspect for a teenager. Teenagers want to know that there will always be a place they can go during their limited downtime. Most teens feel like they don't get much time to relax between school, homework, sports and everything else they deal with on a regular basis, so when they can sit down and just relax, it's really important.

Tip: Make sure your teen has some space in his bedroom for sitting and relaxing. Think beyond the bedroom set and how you might be able to add a chair or even a small sofa. This doesn’t mean you have to bring in a television and all a living room’s comforts – it’s more about respecting that at times, teens just want to hang out in their bedrooms.

Other factors that go into teens’ thoughts on furniture is whether or not they will like the furnishings a few months from now and if they feel like they'll be able to entertain friends. If their hangout space is boring, they will not want to spend as much time around the house and will instead go other places where there is more to do.

Entertainment Center, Media Center - Furniture.com - Taylor Entertainment/Wall UnitTip: This does not mean your house must look like a romper room to keep your kids around, nor do you need a movie theater, bowling alley and more. You can create a home that appeals both to your older children and you. For example, if your child likes to play video games, make sure you have an entertainment center with lots of storage. Your child will be happy to have a place to store everything, and you’ll be happy that his electronics and accessories are not taking over your living room.

Lastly, your teen’s room or hangout area should reflect your teen. Consider decorating with his interests in mind, like cool patterns, sports teams, hobbies -- that sort of thing. If your teen has a favorite color, keep that in mind when picking out furniture or paint colors. No one wants to be surrounded by a color they can't stand.

Tip: Color, especially in your kid’s room, is one of the easiest – and most affordable design elements to change. Even if you are not planning a complete bedroom overhaul, you can work with your teen to find accessories and bedding that better match his tastes. Also, if you have an informal family room or finished basement where your teen tends to hang out and is the primary user, consider allowing him to put his own design stamp on the room with wall decor and the like.

Remember: Depending on your teen’s age, he might be creating a home of his own sooner rather than later, so you won’t have to live with his sports posters forever  even if you want to.

5 Tips for Creating the Perfect Guest Bedroom

Monday, July 16, 2012 by Stacy Ward

It’s great when friends and family come and stay for a visit, but often the guest accommodations in a home can be an afterthought. If you want overnight visitors to feel welcomed, you need to provide a quiet and comfortable retreat. These 5 tips will help you turn your spare room into a cozy and enjoyable guest bedroom suite.

1. A comfortable bed: It can be difficult for guests to fall asleep when they're in someone else’s home. Provide your guests with a comfortable bed and good mattress. Make bed, bedroom - furntiure.com - Bradbury Queen Bedsure you have plenty of new pillows and a quality comforter or blanket. How do you know if your guest will get a good night's sleep? Try it out! Spend a night or two in your guest bed and see if you wake up refreshed!

2. Clean and de-clutter: You want your guest room to be clean and clutter-free. Before your company arrives, make sure you do a thorough cleaning and remove all dust and cobwebs from furniture and corners. Guest rooms often moonlight as storage rooms, so make sure you remove all miscellaneous items. If you have nowhere else to store things, try using boxes and bins that can be easily tucked out of sight while your guests visit.

3. Fresh linens and toiletries:  Fresh sheets, towels and blankets will let your guest know you care about their stay. Put a stack of clean towels with a new bar of soap at the end of the bed or on top of the dresser. Another elegant touch is a basket full of small toiletries items, like travel-sized shampoos, conditioners, lotions and soaps -- your guests will appreciate the thought.

4. Extra space:  Make sure there is room for guests to put their clothes and personal items. A closet stocked with plenty of hangers is a must. Provide an empty dresser or at least two or three empty draws for guests to put their clothes. Also, clear space off the top of the dresser so guests have a spot for their smaller, personal items. Remember, your guests won’t feel at home if they are living out of a suitcase.

5. Sitting area: If your guest room is large enough, provide a separate sitting area with a small table and comfortable chair, perfect for relaxing after a long day. If your room is on the smaller side, add a a free-standing light and smaller chair or a nightstand with a lamp so guests can read a book or magazine. Plus, a nightstand with drawers can provide extra space for guests to place small personal items.

Creating the perfect guest bedroom suite does not have to be complicated. Following these basic tips will ensure your guests a comfortable stay and a return visit!
