Sofas and sectionals are the most important addition to your family or living spaces. A sectional or sofa is more than just a place to sit; it’s an integral feature of your home used to lounge, entertain, and gather with family and friends.

Sofas and sectionals are comfy, functional, and fit many room sizes. They’re designed to meet many different preferences, spaces, and styles. Whether you want to lounge and relax with a large sectional or create symmetry that fosters conversation with a sofa, learn how to choose your perfect fit with this buying guide.

F.A.Q.

Where to place a sofa?

The size, space, surrounding furniture, and functional aspects of a room all factor into sofa placement. For example, you always want the sofa flush against the wall in smaller rooms to maximize space.

But in a larger room, you can centralize a couch and build the room around it. Where there are focal points such as a TV or fireplace, orient your sofa toward them.

Other things to consider when choosing where to put a couch are how smoothly traffic can flow around it and room for side tables.

How can you assess the quality of a sofa?

To assess quality, always start with the frame. A high-quality sofa will have a frame made from metal or kiln-dried hardwood. Then, look at the joints to ensure they're fitted or screwed tightly with no loose or moving parts.

The suspension also matters: eight-way hand-tied springs are a sign of the best quality. But sinuous spring is also reliable.

Next, examine the cushioning (does it have high-density foam?) and upholstery (leather, fabric, or synthetic?) to understand how durable and resilient the coach will be. Finally, sit down and check for comfort!
